FM Approvals is one of the most recognised certification services worldwide, with a focus on the preservation of goods. The process applies to many product types and it is articulated in numerous standards based on scientific research and over 100 years of experience.

FM, Factory Mutual Insurance Company, is divided into FM Global which is an insurance company and FM Approvals which is a testing laboratory and certification body.

FM Global is the largest insurance company in the world dedicated exclusively to commercial and industrial properties . It boasts about a third of the companies on the Fortune 100 list among its clients and employs more than 1,800 engineers around the globe.

Through the Highly Protected Risk (HPR) concept, FM Global provides the best insurance coverage at the best terms, ensuring that all known risks are kept below the minimum acceptable level and providing peace of mind to the insured.

FM Approvals certifies products and services and also draws up standards for product testing, which are freely available at

Increasingly, these American standards are also required in Europe and Italy, in large industrial or commercial complexes insured by FM. The products will therefore have to comply with local regulations and, in addition, FM standards.

Conductors, by building with FM Approved products, will obtain lower insurance premiums.

FM Approvals has a research and testing campus consisting of four laboratories, whose activities cover four technical areas:

1. Building materials
2. Electrical systems
3. Fire protection
4. Flooding

In the context of building envelopes, FM Approvals carries out tests on

– Roofs
– Roof-mounted systems (cooling towers, photovoltaic panels, etc.)
– Walls
– Fenestration
– Anti-flooding systems
– Earthquake-proof products

Considering the impact of fire, earthquakes, weather events (storms, hail, floods).

For building casing, the relevant FM Approvals standards are:

FM4880, FM4881, FM4882 for walls;
FM4450, FM4470 for roofing;
FM4471 for roof panels;
FM4411 for cavities in walls.

Typical of FM when assessing the approval of a panel range, is trying to limit the number of tests to be carried out by testing the most critical solutions, e.g:

  • fire tests: the solutions with the greatest thickness on PIR or least thickness rock wool foams;
  • mechanical tests in windy condition : the solutions with the least thickness on PIR or rock wool, the greatest spans and the least fasteners.

The tests that are performed for panels are:

  • ASTM E2058 or ISO 121136 flammability test, possibly calorimeter test (which is giant!);
  • Room Corner Test 1- UBC 26-3;
  • Room Corner Test 2;
  • 16ft (4.9m) Parallel Panel Test;
  • Outdoor weather conditions, UV and hail test;
  • Windborne Debris test;
  • Cavity systems; Ventilated facades; Test 4411 -12/2018.

Factory Mutual approved systems are entered into the FM APPROVAL GUIDE and, for roofs, FM ROOF NAV databases. Please find the links below. Application guidelines and recommendations are entered in the FM Global data sheets.

When it comes to testing, we provide our experience and our KNOW-HOW.

As specialists, we offer comprehensive advice during all stages of laboratory testing, from design to documentation of results.

Listening is the most important phase of our interaction: we want you to develop a product that is the sum of your identity and needs.

First, we try to understand your real needs, the channels and markets you want to measure yourself against.

Then we show you how the testing and certification process takes place: we need to engage with you, to fully grasp your point of view. Then we develop a proposal that respects – compatibly with the required performance – your product lines, your production lines and, as far as possible, potential economies of scale using products and methodologies already established in your company.

Beyond the opportunities, which we will illustrate to you, we will then advise you on what we would do in your position.

We will advise you with our experience on what, how and where to test. In which laboratory to test? In the one best suited to your needs.

Once the key has been turned, we prepare a project that is comprehensive in all details. Which materials and components to use, an important part of our dialogue on which we can best advise you. In addition to this, a cost sheet and a weight forecast, to allow you to check whether your goals will be achieved. Using industry best practices, we are convinced of this.

A consultants we give advices, then we leave it to the client to put it into practice. We are not like that: we take off the tie and put on our work clothes when needed. We launch the production of the samples, we are present during the gluing of the doors, we offer support during the process and shoeing, we proceed with our technicians to the installation of the samples in the laboratory and we are physically present at the testing. We manage the post-test documentation review phase, explain the documentation to you and remain available for all issues related to results management.

In addition, we offer you comprehensive consultancy during all stages of certification, assisting you:

  • in the planning and budgeting of activities, to determine an investment plan;
  • During all the communication with the notified body;
  • during sampling (withdrawing products for testing);
  • in implementing your FPC – Factory Production Control;
  • In preparing the necessary documentation including instructions and labels;
  • with our presence during initial inspections;
  • afterwards, as support for all management issues.
